IDEAS

It was uncommon and potent when Gabrielle Chanel asked Ernest Beaux to make "a woman's perfume with a woman's scent" in 1921. She was shown a composition by the nose that was innovative and used aldehydes in a way never seen before. Mademoiselle selected the fragrance's fifth sample and gave it the moniker N°5. She chose a bottle with a cutting-edge design for this new scent, complete with a white label and a faceted cabochon on top. The richer version of N°5—the eau de parfum—was created in 1986 by Jacques Polge, the CHANEL nose since 1978, who reworked the formulation of his predecessor.
